The Range of Modal Logic
نویسنده
چکیده
George Gargov was an active pioneer in the ’Sofia School’ of modal logicians. Starting in the 1970s, he and his colleagues expanded the scope of the subject by introducing new modal expressive power, of various innovative kinds. The aim of this paper is to show some general patterns behind such extensions, and review some very general results that we know by now, 20 years later. We concentrate on simulation invariance, decidability, and correspondence. What seems clear is that ’modal logic’ as a genre of logical systems has a much wider scope than originally conceived, and that we have not reached its limits yet. to appear in D. Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms
Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...
متن کاملCoalgebraic Modal Logic in CoCasl
We extend the algebraic-coalgebraic specification language CoCasl by full coalgebraic modal logic based on predicate liftings for functors. This logic is more general than the modal logic previously used in CoCasl and supports the specification of a variety of modal logics, such as graded modal logic, majority logic, and probabilistic modal logic. CoCasl thus becomes a modern modal language tha...
متن کاملPrinciples of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning : Proceedings of the Second International Conference
A general method of automated modal logic theorem proving is discussed and illustrated. This method is based on the sub-stitutional framework for the development of systems for hybrid reasoning. Sentences in modal logic are translated into a constraint logic in which the constraints represent the connections between worlds in the possible world semantics for modal logic. Deduction in the constr...
متن کاملModal Logic in Two Gestalts
We develop a translation-based view dual of modal logic as the study of intensional languages that are at the same time interesting expressive and decidable parts of standard logical systems. This tandem approach improves our understanding of modal logic – while at the same time, it extends the range of modal notions and techniques into broader areas of standard logic. 1 Translation as a Way of...
متن کاملA Van Benthem/Rosen theorem for coalgebraic predicate logic
Coalgebraic modal logic serves as a unifying framework to study a wide range of modal logics beyond the relational realm, including probabilistic and graded logics as well as conditional logics and logics based on neighbourhoods and games. Coalgebraic predicate logic (CPL), a generalization of a neighbourhoodbased first-order logic introduced by Chang, has been identified as a natural first-ord...
متن کاملRepresentation, Reasoning, and Relational Structures: a Hybrid Logic Manifesto
This paper is about the good side of modal logic, the bad side of modal logic, and how hybrid logic takes the good and fixes the bad. In essence, modal logic is a simple formalism for working with relational structures (or multigraphs). But modal logic has no mechanism for referring to or reasoning about the individual nodes in such structures, and this lessens its effectiveness as a representa...
